We arrived late on a Sunday night at the end of March. Valeria checked us in quickly and we were informed that there was some food in our room as we had arrived after dinner. Food - it was a feast beautifully prepared and very welcome indeed. On our next morning we were greeted by Anete with a beautiful warm smile. Once again Anete couldn’t do enough for us - amazing customer service, this is what Elba Palace is all about. From Lupe who ensures all the bedrooms are kept to such high standards, Yamila in the bar and restaurant, Susan who has just started but who will fit in very well, Andrea so professional, Jose, Carlos the list is endless- they are all brilliant. Ali as always is central to everthing the restaurant team leader but also a real team player he epitomises professionalism and nothing is ever too much for this extraordinary maitre de who is the King of the Palace. The manager Miquel is very visible and a real people person. Theresa looks after us throughout the day, Malud the best cocktail maker on ithe island - Get well soon we miss you! Elba Palace is a superb hotel if you like to relax and be in quiet, beautiful surroundings. The food is amazing, the rooms are large and airy. Entertainment is a good mix - there was a classical pianist in the restaurant tonight. The swimming pool area is gorgeous and is well looked after by Paco and Omar. The Palace is hard to beat but if you want modern and lively this is not for you - if you want old world charm with great service - the Palace is the one. 26 visits and counting. The service is impeccable, the staff superb, the building gorgeous - it even has its own hotel cat Elba. It is simply the best hotel on the island and in the Canaries - thank you and please don’t change. PS i didn’t even mention the Golf Club and driving range!

We stayed early March with friends and was overjoyed to have found the Elba Palace Golf hotel on line. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who handled our check in professionally. We were offered a welcoming glass of chilled champagne whilst our bags were taken to our rooms. Our room was spacious with comfy beds, nice bedding and toiletries. Golf course and practice area were a welcome sight after leaving the dull skies of London. The pool area is a good size with a heated pool and how wonderful to find sunbeds available at anytime. They had a wine tasting evening sampling the local wines and produce. It was a good opportunity to meet other guests staying at the hotel. All staff members were extremely friendly. Breakfast had a great selection, dinner was perfect and we enjoyed the buffet starters and deserts.

The hotel makes a great first impression. Elegant reception, attentive and friendly staff, spotlessly clean everywhere and spacious room and bathroom. We loved the courtyard leading to all the function areas, that had a smart but relaxed feel. A big plus for us coming to the Canary Islands at this time of year and being non golfers, was having a nice swimming pool that wasn't too cold to enjoy and a spacious pool area with no need to reserve sun beds. The only negative was that there was no pool service, which I would have expected from a 5 star hotel. We chose to stay half board so we could chill by day and enjoy good food in the restaurant by night. Unfortunately that wasn't our experience, with the main courses being the biggest criticism (listed below for anyone interested to know). I must say that all the staff in the restaurant and cafeteria were fantastic, and couldn't do any more than they did, as was the amazingly efficient lady that worked in the bar on her own. Definitely a need for more staff, as they were all flat out all the time. Food criticism The number of fillet steaks that went back to the kitchen was an indication that they were not able to cater to the guest's requirements. I ordered a medium (as the one on the next table seemed to be giving a blood transfusion) and got very well done. The following day my wife ordered well done and got medium rare. When it came back again after further cooking, it had been cut half way down in a cross, folded out so that the centre of the steak was cooked, then put together again. The result was a dry, tough fillet steak. Odd combinations like pork ribs with a cauliflower floret served on a potato waffle (freezer bag style that you would give your kids for their tea with beans), a teaspoon of cumin seeds overpowering a portion of potatoes and some main courses coming with potatoes but not vegetables or the other way round. The desserts looked and tasted like the catering supplier type used by many British national restaurant's. In the cafeteria: at breakfast, most of the hot food was cold; and at lunch, the sandwiches were filled with cheap, reformed ham and what tasted like processed cheese.

Reception of hotel is beautiful and I really like the square where you can access the restaurants and bars. We arrived on the 13th March and first impressions were good, however our experience has now changed due mainly to the lack of staff, it is obvious that they have a staffing problem as it is the same staff at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most of the staff are really friendly and hard working but If you don’t like something and tell them their attitude changes completely. I sat in the bar for 20 minutes waiting to order and men that came In after me were served first, I understand when it Is busy that can happen so I didn’t make a fuss and eventually got to place my order, except it never came!! When I asked the waiter who took my order how much longer I would need to wait(by the way it was only 2 glasses of wine) he told me quite abruptly that I hadn’t place an order??? The food is the biggest let down in the hotel, when we first arrived breakfast was good, now when we go we have to ask for a table to be cleared and reset, certain times like bread, milk and juice aren’t being replenished. As for the dinner at night I will no longer even attempt to order food, I had the fillet steak with vegetables, it was the smallest steak I have ever seen with 2 asparagus at the side! Chicken with potatoes and Mojo sauce was inedible, the chicken was tough and there was a teaspoon of sauce on the chicken and Nothing on the potatoes, so very dry. Again when I sent the food back the waiter took it as a personal insult. My husband also asked for a well done fillet steak and the blood was oozing from it. This could be a good hotel but if they don’t have enough staff they should not be taking so many bookings.
