The location of the apartment is fabulous! Perched at the very top of the quaint town of Motovun with views out every window of the surrounding countryside and patio restaurant. A very spacious 1 bedroom with 2 separate loft areas making it perfect for families (note that there are steep ladders to climb into loft areas). The apartment was very clean and quiet. We would highly recommend staying here!!

“Worth paying for the best room that has balcony and large windows”

Motovun sits on a hill and as other reviews indicate, it’s a small, compact village where all restaurants, shops, lodging is within a few hundred meters. Motovun sits on a hill and as other reviews indicate, it’s a small, compact village where all restaurants, shops, lodging is within a few hundred meters. This means it’s rather crowded with tourists- and a lot are on e-bikes. The hill is steep and the road is stones. Hotel Kastel is at the top. Their van/SUV will meet you and your luggage at the bottom of the hill if needed (personal cars may not drive all the way up). We arrived by taxi. We’re glad we got the “Exclusive” room (number 202) since it is the only one with a wide (but narrow) balcony with a small table and two chairs and overlooks the front restaurant area. This means you’ll hear the guests talking but not too late. Mind you we’re not sure why they had music playing from speakers at 8:00 AM (annoying). The room photos are already posted. Rather 1970s style. Large king bed. Not that comfortable and the single duvets we found annoying and would have preferred one large one. But the light and view of trees made this a lovely room. Unfortunately the toilet dripping constantly made for a difficult night sleep. Compared to other hotels on our trip we found the staff less attentive (for example dripping toilet was not fixed after we pointed it out) and often there’s no one at front reception but could be summoned by ringing a bell. Breakfast buffet was very good and in a spacious area. Hotel has a spar and pool that’s very inviting. Our massages (olive oil 60 minutes) were very good.

We spent the second two nights of an Inn Travel walking holiday here. The drive up from Livade was spectacular and the last bit up to the hotel certainly required good driving skills! The room was spacious and comfortable. Bear in mind you need to make sure all the windows and doors are tightly closed in order for the air conditioning to work. The location of this hotel is excellent but we didn't get chance to use the wellness centre as the walks were too long to allow much time at the end of the day.

A compact room but somewhat expected from a 17th century Renaissance era castle made into today’s Kastel hotel. Mine was above some kind of entrance with no nice view. There was therefore a lot of traffic noise and wafting cigarette smoke when I opened my window so I had to keep it closed instead of enjoying the fresh air. At the front of the hotel are several old chestnut trees, great for shade on a sunny day. The hill the hotel is located on is surrounded by forests, famous for their truffles. Speaking of hill, it is very steep to get here, especially when biking. There are so many pedestrians to try to avoid hitting on a very narrow cobblestone street, making things a little tense and difficult. The staff was hard to find, no-one ever seemed to be at the front desk. The hotel appeared understaffed, and the attitude of most of the staff was indifferent at best. The place definitely shows its age but is reasonably functional. A reminder that no personal cars can come into town, only local van transport can get you in/out. This can add a lot of waiting time when trying to leave the facilities. I called for a van and had to wait nearly an hour more than they had told me. Though the driver was super nice and didn’t want a tip (said it was provided by the hotel), I was very nervous I would miss my connection with such delay. This place truly felt like just another tourist trap. I would not stay here again.
