We stayed at the Borrowdale gate hotel on 29th December for the night, as a much needed break after christmas. I had dined here previously so knew the restaurant was exceptional. Firstly the staff at this hotel are wonderful. They could not have done more for us. The front of house lady was so funny, warm and welcoming. From the manager, restaurant staff, house keeping what an incredible team!!! Our room was beautiful, large and the views breathtaking to wake up to. Dining here is a treat in itself. From breakfast, lunch and dinner you could not want more from a hotel. My husband is a very picky eater and he was in his element with our evening meal. The restaurant is up there with some of the best in the michelin guide. We can not wait to plan another trip and return.

An absolutely stunning setting complimented by a superb hotel. The levels of service and quality of cuisine offered, are among of the most enjoyed of any l have witnessed anywhere in the world. It is beautifully appointed throughout and superbly managed and staffed. The two ladies on reception (Sandra and Shynese) are welcoming courteous and very personable and pleasant. The proprietors of this establishment, have every right to be immensely proud of every aspect of this business, in my opinion.

“The lack of hot (even warm) water in hotel bathroom, Borrowdale Gates, Rooms 11 & 16 "nd - 3rd January 2026”

We stayed at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel the 2nd - 3rd January 2026, having much enjoyed several visits some years ago. This visit was the key event of a special occasion - my wife's 60th Birthday; the hotel was in a convenient position in addition, being close to the Lodore Falls Hotel where we had spent the afternoon having a spa treatment and massage. Having read many recent reviews of the Borrowdale Gates since our last stay, I agree that the restaurant service is superb, first-class, in terms of its cuisine, presentation and the lovely staff. The same cannot be said of all the staff, sadly. Whilst the bedrooms including the bathrooms are spacious and well-appointed, there was a problem with a lack of hot (or even reasonably warm) water from the bathroom sink, the shower and bath. My study of reviews on the hotel identified no fewer than three other recent complaints on the same subject - the lack of hot water, which I quoted in full, but Trip Advisor asked me to remove these quotes. Returning to the story, it was our daughter in Room 11 who alerted us to the problem; on checking the taps in our room we discovered the water temperature was 'luke' at its best. We contacted the helpful Receptionist who said we should give it half-an-hour or so before trying again as many other guests would be having showers or baths at this time (5 pm - 7 pm.) So we waited. After the time appointed, we tested the water again, but it was only marginally better. My wife and I had a 'cool' shower, but our daughter who had a bath was so cold afterwards she retreated to bed to warm up. I spoke again to the friendly Receptionist who said nothing further could be done, but that she would call the Duty Manager ("I'll 'phone, not just email her" she said.) She also promised that we would have an opportunity to air our concerns with the manager the next morning, a promise which unfortunately was not fulfilled. The next morning at Breakfast, we overhears two ladies (guests) complaining to the Manageress about the same problem in their room - no hot water when needed at 5 pm. I approached them to share our own concerns, at which point I was told to go away by the manageress who was clearly annoyed by this collaboration between her guests. As I turned away, my daughter (who had been watching the episode) witnessed the manageress roll her eyes at my expense. How unprofessional! When we later arrived to checkout, we were met by the same Receptionist, but she was not her usual friendly self and curtly presented the bill, saying that £25 for each of us had been deducted from the bill because of the water problem. I asked her if we could speak to the Manageress, but this was ignored and no member of the management team arrived to apologise, hear our concerns and offer any explanation why this issue had not been resolved since other guests had complained. We did enjoy our stay overall, largely thanks to the excellent cuisine, but the unresolved lack of hot water and the defensive attitude by a staff member and a member of the management team did have an impact in marring what was our special weekend.
