We have just returned home after a one night stay in room 101 at The Knaresborough Inn. The hotel was clean, warm and beautifully decorated, the staff were pleasant and friendly, and the roast turkey that my husband and I both had for dinner was lovely. The room however was not a pleasant experience, I'm afraid to say. We live in a rural village in the heart of the Peak District National Park, and are not used to night time noise. The room we were in was only single glazed and faced the car park, which meant we had a very disturbed nights sleep. At 4.07am we heard the first lorry going up the main road, and after this were unable to get back to sleep. At 5.27am someone arrived in the car park below our room, slamming the doors as they got out of their vehicle, at 5.49am the first refuse lorry reversed up the hotel drive to the rear car park, with its reversing warning bleepers going, and at 6.34am this dreadful experience was repeated, as a second refuse vehicle reversed into the rear car park. The windows in this bedroom need some secondary glazing to reduce outside noise, it was like sleeping with the windows on 'latch', and I can safely say that this has ruined what should have been a very lovely stay, as the bedroom was nice, and the bed very comfortable.

At check in we were asked to book meal times for Christmas eve, Christmas and boxing day. We were told that the restaurant that night was busy between 7 and 8 so we booked a time after this. When we came down to eat, it took us over 15 minutes of wondering around to find someone to tell us where our table was. We then waited a further 15 minutes or more before being informed it was bar ordering only. If this had been explained a lot of time could have been saved. Eventually after a further 1/2 hour wait, for our starters, the waiter brought out our main course. He apologised and took these back and eventually we got some food. When we did eventually get our main courses, they were cold. I emailed the hotel on 24 December and still have not received a response or apology. Christmas day dinner was also chaotic, but at least we only had to wait 10 minutes for our table. The food again was generally ok but cold. The Yorkshire pudding looked fabulous, but was cold and tasted of cardboards. Very disappointing for Yorkshire, and we noted most guests left these. Our final evening meal on Boxing Day was acceptable. Breakfast were self service, but generally fine. The room was fine, but was left subserviced for all 3 nights of our stay. No bins emptied or towels changed. We paid the best part of £900.00 for a three night Christmas stay, so assumed some level of quality, and good service. We were very disappointed generally with the restaurant and would expected table service for the money charged and a reasonable quality of service and food. The hotel was also overrun with dogs, which we were not aware of. Surely even dog friendly hotels should have them in only restricted areas in the restaurants and bedrooms. I simply do not understand why dogs should be taken to Christmas Dinner and Breakfast and be allowed to sit on the seats adjacent to the tables. On numerous occasions dogs were barking and winning at each other. I do like dogs but do think they have a time and place and should not be treated like children. We had previously stayed at the hotel for Christmas, when it was the Dower House and had afar better overall experience. we understand the present owners spent £5m on a refurbishment, but seemed to have missed out on service and staff. The staff were friendly but need some additional training and are overworked due to insufficient numbers. If we were to stay again it would not be at Christmas and on a B&B basis only

Fantastic Hotel. Clean with friendly staff. However for our break of three nights including Christmas Day lunch the food was poor on both days either side of Christmas Day. Ordered linguine with chicken. Got spaghetti (looked like tinned) and dried out, burnt chicken. Haddock bubble and squeak was mashed potato and spinage (haddock not found). Queue at the bar was very long, as there was not enough staff. Serving of food was slow and waiting times between courses totally unacceptable. Up to an hour plus. The place was overbooked and hotel guests were treated no different than walk ins. Christmas Day dinner was served for two on tables that were too small. Tables were reserved without names on tables and used by whoever sat down first (days one and three). We looked forward to this break and came away felling we were misssold and cheated.
