Just spent 5 nights at Leblon Spot Design Hostel and it was a great stay. It was clean and tidy and the staff was so friendly. They helped us with everything and we were greeted with a smile every time we came to the reception. Breakfast is very simple, not its nice that it's not crowded in the mornings. It feels almost like its a private home. The area is the best and safest in Rio and there are many cool restaurants and bars everywhere. It was a bit noisy from the street on Friday night, but the rest of the week was quiet. I recommend it to everyone who wants a more quiet and cozy hostel in Rio.

I stayed here for five nights at the end of my trip to Rio in march. I had stayed at three other hostels in Rio in similar rooms (double ensuite with AC). Leblonspot was the most expensive and in the most upmarket area and I certainly expected it to be the best of the four. However, whilst it was more than acceptable and I would stay again, it was probably the least enjoyable of the four. I'd probably give it a rating of 3.5 out of 5. Leblon itself is an upmarket residential area that is more laidback than Ipanema and is far less touristy than Ipanema and Copacabana. It is very safe with lots of bars and restaurants nearby the hostel. It's about 10-15 mins walk to the beach. Upon arrival the Hostel looks more like a smart hotel than a hostel with staff (english-speaking) being professional but not as friendly as I would have liked. The downstairs communal area is ok, with outside tables for breakfast being best. At check-in you have to sign a form accepting the hostel rules, no alcohol, no guests in the rooms, no throwing rubbish over the wall etc. My overall impression was that the hostel felt a little too sterile with no real atmosphere. My 'master suite' double room was on the first floor and was a reasonable size with a very large ensuite and walk-in shower, which was the best I encountered during my stay in Rio. AC was a little noisy and the bed linen was very poor quality - not really suitable for this standard of Hostel (I had better when staying in a favela hostel for a third of the price). My room was not very quiet at it was opposite the communal toilets on the first floor so very noisy first thing in the morning and there is quite a lot of road noise as well (not uncommon in Rio). The worst aspect of my stay was the lack of room cleaning during my stay. I don't need the sheets changed daily but I don't think it unreasonable to empty the bin by the loo for the used toilet paper (you generally cannot flush loo roll down the toilets in Brazil). This is not an issue limited to Leblonspot, but it is made worse by having an open top bin which wasn't emptied for three days! Excellent in-room free wifi though. Breakfast was fine with the usual rolls, toasted ham and cheese sanwiches and juice/coffee. Another disapointing aspect was that although there are a few lockers to store your bags upon arrival, they will not let you use them when you have checked out - not good if you have an evening flight. So the Hostel is in a nice area, plenty of bars/restaurants nearby and walking distance to the beach. It is clean, modern and well equipped but devoid of any real ambience. If I wanted to stay in Leblon I'd think about returning but it wouldn't be top of my list the next time I visit Rio.
