Guilin is a popular tourist destination and deservedly so. River trips take you into unparalleled natural scenery. If you have ever seen a Chinese water painting with its delicate almost ethereal scenes, then sailing along the river in Guilin is like being in the centre of one of these paintings! If you want a truly Chinese experience in Guilin then the Grand Link Hotel will give it to you. The rooms are spacious and the one I had overlooked a winding river with bamboo overhangs - a taste of things to come ! Breakfasts, of course, are Chinese but if you want Western style, there is room for that as well. There are many distinctive features in the hotel including a spacious garden and statues. Service is also very good with every attempt to respond to requests. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk into the centre of the city and there are buses all the time taking people to the river trips that are an absolute must. A great experience in the hotel, in the city and on the river !

Your driver can't take you any longer than to the gate of the Guilin Botanical Garden from where the hotel provides a free shuttle. The location of the hotel is inside the botanical garden where the rooms are spread in a number of buildings of typical chinese design, partly around a large pond with a great number of large colorful carps. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable and large. The rooms have umbrellas since you have to walk to a separate building for breakfast and dinner. The hotel has a swimming pool which is only just deep enough to make it possible to swim. Breakfast is OK although with emphasis on Chinese dishes, but you can have an omelette, bacon and toast too. The menu in the restaurant has photos and the food is alright, but chose a table away from the kitchen from where there is a loud hissing sound since they apparently use steam under high pressure to heat the food.

We only stayed in this hotel for one night, during our tour of China, and did not use the restaurant for dinner. The hotel is very large, but is arranged in to 'wings', which makes it feel less so. We only stayed in this hotel for one night, during our tour of China, and did not use the restaurant for dinner. The hotel is very large, but is arranged in to 'wings', which makes it feel less so. We stayed in room 3,511, which was a 'superior' room. This was larger than a standard hotel room, and had a very large, very comfortable bed. The hotel is the opposite side of the river to most hotels, and although on a road, was very quiet, and we slept very well. Breakfast was not as aimed at western visitors as other hotels we had stayed at in China, but then, most visitors seemed to be Chinese. There was still a fairly good choice, however.If you just need a quiet night, with good sleep, in Guilin, then this would be fine.

the staff is extremely unknowledgeable, unhelpful, and discourteous. Staff often gave me incorrect information (front desk stating the gym closed at a certain time, and hotel guidebook stating the correct information, etc.) Rooms of a 4-star hotel, staff of a 1-star hotel. If the staff was more helpful, friendly, and well-informed, I'd stay here again. I really liked the room I had: I stayed in the executive suite. But since the staff gave me more trouble than help, I'd hesitate to stay here if I were to return to Guilin.
