“Better than I had feared”

Stayed here in an oceanview deluxe suite for 2 nights while travelling down the west coast. The location is superb but the hotel needs some TLC in places. The bathroom was very tired and we noticed several cracked floor tiles in our kitchenette and outside the door. The door lock was very fiddly to operate and didn’t feel very secure. The bed was soft but extremely comfortable and we fell to sleep listening to the sound of the Tasman Sea. We ate in the restaurant on our first night: the food was OK but the view fantastic and the bill reflected that. The hotel appears to be used by guided tours and so there were several large tables in the restaurant which slowed service. That said, the staff were polite and our food was served with a smile. We had been warned of the sandflies but didn’t experience any. All of the windows in the room had insect screens over them. It’s a shame they don’t also provide a screen for the patio door as it would’ve been nice to also leave that open overnight.

An excellent location for Pancake Rocks and indeed to experience a West Coast sunset if you are lucky enough to. I loved the ethos of making the hotel fit with the surrounding of rain forest with all the connecting pathways etc. The room we had, if a little tired, was very spacious with an ocean view and indeed set into the rain forest. We were also lucky enough to see two male Kiwi’s! The restaurant and Bar have been designed to appreciate those sunsets and the evening meal was good. I should also say that the front of house staff were friendly and polite. The quality of the breakfast was ok but nothing special, something we found in many NZ hotels sadly. The main thing that let this hotel down is the cleanliness of the rooms and main restaurant. I did raise the issue of cleanliness specific to our room with the Receptionist who assured me she would relay this to housekeeping. We were only there for one night as I suspect many people are when travelling through, therefore I am unable to comment as to whether improvements were made. Unfortunately, with many NZ properties they rely on a captive audience knowing that bookings will always be made. Definite improvements could be made to give the ultimate wow experience.

Hotel was very nice. Room was a good size with a small kitchen and a balcony overlooking the sea, although the room was across the road from the sea. My main complaint was that we had to get our luggage from the car park to our room across the road. There was a tunnel under the road. It was very difficult to drag our bags over there, the staff did not offer any help. No account was taken of our lack of ability to manage our bags. Another negative was the bar was closed by 10 pm, we were in an area where there was little to do in the evening, I was expecting to be able to have a drink in the bar, also no room service. I expected better service from a Scenic hotel.
