We booked a Japanese room - we wanted a room where my young kids (aged 5, 7 and 9) could stay in the same room as the parents but still be in separate "rooms" within a room - Hotel Okura Fukuoka was one of the few hotels which had those old big Japanese rooms which had multiple "rooms" within the room. Surprisingly (and this is a good surprise) the room's TV had access to Youtube and Netflix! This was a big deal for the kids. For Japanese rooms they would actually arrange for a timing for when the housekeeping would come in, during the evening, to move the furniture around and set up the futons for us, it can be when you are out sightseeing or for us, because we sometimes returned to our rooms early, we could just hang around whilst they helped us with the beds. No complains about the room at all, it was perfect for what we needed. The breakfast buffet was really good, we had quite a few breakfast buffets along the way but this is worth paying the price for, they had a few dishes (rotating) which were specifically Fukuoka food so there was Mojiko baked curry one day, chicken tempura another day etc etc. Quality of the food was high. Location wise it was great, not directly at Hakata station but close enough and easy to reach via subway. It was also easy to get to the international airport via taxi. It's just next to Riverain Mall and also Hakata River (nice to walk along), there's a great tempura restaurant in Riverain Mall that I highly recommend, and if you want mizutaki there is one famous restaurant within walking distance which we didn't realise you had to book early for so we didn't manage to get in. It's also literally next to the covered shopping arcade that leads all the way to Kushida Shrine so it's great for sightseeing. Overall it was a high-class old-school hotel, with the level of service you'd expect from that kind of hotel.

I was here for three nights. The room was a standard double room - great for one person, and it would also be a comfortable size for two people. Cost was reasonable for a room this large (very large by Japanese standards). The room had enough storage, a bed that was hard but comfortable, a great reading chair, and a good workdesk area. The room was very quiet. I booked the rate with breakfast; if you like breakfasts, that rate is worthwhile. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, one of the best I had in Japan, with a good assortment of Asian and western food, all well-prepared and delicious. The location was very convenient if you are coming in by plane. There is a subway station at the airport for the red line; just take it for four stops to the Nakasukawabata subway station. From Nakasukawabata station, it is about a 250 m walk to the hotel (just under two blocks). There is an internal walkway to the hotel from the subway station, but I found that the hotel is easier to find when walking outside. Note that the airport subway station is at the domestic terminal, not the international terminal, so if you are coming in from outside Japan you will have to take the free shuttle bus to get from the international terminal to the domestic terminal, before catching the subway. If coming in by train, there is a subway station for the red line at Hakata station. The location was also convenient for catching local buses, many of which have routes along the street in front of the hotel. (Google maps is your friend to help in figuring out which bus to catch). There is a reasonable amount of shopping within two or three blocks of the hotel, and two of the superb 7-11s that Japan is famous for within two blocks of the hotel - great for a light supper or snacks. Front-desk staff consistently spoke very good English. Overall, this was a great stay, and I would definitely stay here again if in Fukuoka.

2 main grievances : 1. Contacted reservation 8 months in advance. Many email exchanges on room rates, dates etc. We finalised the date with the reservation team in Jul and concluded that i would use my miserable leftover points to offset a room upgrade. One week before our arrival (we started our 1st leg of holiday in Seoul), i received an email to reconfirm my stay. I thought it was just a mere reconfirmation, so i replied with a yes. Upon check in, i was snapped with a much higher rates which was not what we agreed upon. They said they will check backend. When they reverted, they said because i ''agreed'' to the email i replied a week earlier, (which if i had scrolled further down, there was a rate breakdown). I explained who would have thought when everything was already confirmed and agreed, that the reservation team would have used a different rate than our agreed rate we finalised in Jul? What was disappointing was that they insist that i have to ''bear'' the consequence of the email i replied even when i showed them my email correspondence. They insisted i had to pay the original rate (higher) without any compromising even with proofs. Resending to reservation team to clarify during my stay went complete silence. The way things were handled was very unprofessional from their end. I felt scammed. 2. Housekeeping left the toilet choked after cleaning the room. There was no effect to do a quality check before they left the room. All in all, i felt that the hotel of this high standard would have done better but the way they handled my dispute on room rate let us very disappointed. It just ruined our stay there.
